Children's facility could compete with Metro area sites
Melissa Burden/ The Detroit NewsFlint's Hurley Medical Center launched a new children's hospital inside its facility on Tuesday, becoming one of six children's hospitals across the state and posing possible competition for its Metro Detroit counterparts.
Hurley Children's Hospital, which will operate as a hospital within a hospital, is about 10 years in the making, said Hurley spokeswoman Ilene Cantor.
The hospital said it annually treats about 80,000 children, with pediatric patients coming from 15 counties, including Alpena, Midland, Bay and Saginaw to the north and Shiawassee to the southwest. Hurley Children's Hospital provides pediatric intensive care, oncology, a nationally recognized asthma program, a neonatal intensive care unit and a pediatric emergency room, among other specialties. The hospital is more than doubling space for pediatric emergency care.
