Since 2009, the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) has partnered with Ducker Worldwide to produce both the European Powered Access Rental Market Report and the US Powered Access Rental Market Report.
For over five years the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) has partnered with Ducker Worldwide to conduct a detailed analysis of the rental equipment market. This rather stable yet growing industry presents several opportunities as well as barriers for key industry players. Ducker examines these market dynamics within both Europe and the U.S., providing key facts and figures in which decisions can be based on.
The reports examine the state of the powered access equipment rental business in Europe and North America, providing key facts and figures segmented by region including fleet size, utilization rate and retention period. In addition, Ducker Worldwide provides an estimate of the size of the powered access equipment rental fleet worldwide, with a breakdown by region as well as machine type.
Additional valuable information within the reports includes:
Market dynamics—understanding the current market size, market value growth and revenue
Market size—evaluating company specialization and size and re-rental/cross-hire
Investments—trends within the industry by company type and region
Operational aspects—market variables, rental rates, age of fleets
Market trends and drivers—analyzing GDP per capita and market maturity
Through Ducker Worldwide’s in house research teams, numerous interviews were conducted in various languages from offices located in Paris, Berlin, U.S. and Shanghai. Organizations interviewed included rental companies, national rental associations, equipment manufacturers and other various industry experts. Data gathered was compiled and analyzed by Ducker’s industry experts utilizing fact based insights, macro-economic figures (construction trends, GDPs, etc.) and other industry information.
“These reports are an invaluable tool and an extremely useful resource for us when planning fleet investments and monitoring how we stack up against our competitors,” said Peter Douglas, U.K. operations director of Nationwide Platforms.
The 2014 reports reveal the United States’ aerial work platform (AWP) rental market rebounding, but mixed signals in Europe and new data on China
There are now 1,020,000 MEWPs in the worldwide rental fleet. This is up six percent from the previous year, mainly driven by growth in Asia and Latin America. The U.S. AWP rental market rebounded with a strong growth of nine percent in 2013 to reach approximately $7.2 billion and is projected to increase to $8.4 billion in 2015 (see Chart A). U.S. rental companies used several tools to improve revenue in 2013 including expanding fleets, increased rental rates, while enhancing utilization rates.
For the first time, this year’s report included a section concerning China, which registered 20 percent growth over last year. The growth trend is set to continue in this market where there are approximately 6,000 MEWPs.
The European rental market shows mixed results and is marked by three groups: those who struggled in 2013—Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, to a lesser extent Denmark and France—those who slightly increased rental revenues—Sweden and the U.K.—and those who experienced significant growth—Germany and Norway. Despite flat line revenue through the last several years the European rental revenue is projected to reach €2.4 billion by 2015 (see Chart B).
